White elephant gift exchange ideas

Updated October 2026 · Rules, steal variants, and a vote that sticks

Every white elephant ends the same way: someone unwraps the thing, the room loses it, and twenty minutes later nobody can agree on whether that was actually the best gift or just the loudest reaction in the moment. The exchange has a clear winner. It just never gets written down, so the argument happens again next year with slightly different details every time someone retells it.

If You Ain't First turns that twenty minutes into a real record: a group-vote ballot for best gift and worst gift, settled by the room on the spot, with an AI announcer named Ricky calling the reveal like it's a title fight.

Pick your rule set first

“White elephant” isn't one game, it's a family of them. Decide the variant before anyone shows up with a gift, because half the arguments are really just two people playing different rulebooks.

  • The steal rule (Yankee swap / Dirty Santa). Numbers are drawn, each person opens or steals an already-opened gift, a gift stolen three times is frozen for the round. This is the version with the most chaos and the most re-telling.
  • Straight draw, no stealing. Numbers are drawn, everyone opens in order, nothing changes hands after. Calmer, faster, better for a group that includes kids or anyone who hates conflict.
  • The price cap and the theme. Most groups set a dollar limit ($15–$25 is common) and sometimes a theme (“something you already own,” “as bad as possible on purpose”). State both out loud before gifts get bought — a $40 gift next to a $10 gift isn't funny, it's just awkward.

The vote is the part worth keeping

Whatever variant you run, add one step at the end: a ballot for Best Gift and a separate ballot for Worst Gift — two different kinds of winning, and the room usually disagrees on who deserves which. Put both on a group vote board everyone votes on from their phone, one vote each, results revealed live instead of settled by whoever argues longest.

The gift-giver can't vote for their own entry — say that rule out loud before the ballot opens, not after someone notices the count looks off.

Keep a Hall of Fame across years

The real payoff is running the same board every December instead of starting over. “Worst Gift” winners stack into a running Hall of Fame — the fake lottery ticket, the single sock, whatever monstrosity someone's cousin brought in 2024 — so it's a title people defend or chase, not a story that gets fuzzier every retelling. Same board, same link, every year; nobody has to remember where last December's photos ended up.

Give the reveal an announcer

A tied vote read off a phone screen is an anticlimax. Ricky calls the results instead — crowning the Best Gift winner properly and roasting whoever brought the worst one, dialed to whatever your family or office party can handle: a warm “soft” setting for grandma's side of the room (see the family leaderboard), or something sharper if it's the office partyand HR's gone home. FAQ

Does this work for a work party, not just family? Yes — white elephant is as common at office holiday parties as it is at family gatherings. Use the office-safe Ricky setting for that crowd; the ballot mechanic is identical either way.

What if someone steals the same gift the whole game? That's normal and usually means it's the best gift — exactly what the Best Gift ballot should confirm on the record instead of leaving it to whoever brings it up first at next year's party.

What does it cost? Free for three active boards, unlimited people on each. The Hall of Fame board can run every December for free indefinitely — it only needs updating once a year.
